Plasmapheresis

A process used that is similar to dialysis. Plasma, blood fluid, is removed from the blood. The plasma is which contains antibodies is discarded and the body is replaced with other fluids. Many pemphigus experts believe that a patient using plamapheresis should be on an immunosuppressive drug to keep from rebounding.

While there are some pemphigus/pemphigoid patients who believe that alternative and/or homeopathic treatments have helped them, it should be noted that there have been no studies or medical research with findings indicative of effective treatments or procedures in this area.

    Wound Care

The use of topical antibiotics are used to help fight possible infection. With larger areas, sulfa silvadine (by perscription) can be useful. It is recommended that lesions be covered. Vaseline directly on the lesion or directly on cotton material next to the body can be helpful. Teflon bandages work the best to cover lesions, but they can be problematic if tape is needed. On the arms and legs there are now bandages that stick to themselves when wrapped, and new silicone bandages that are used with burn patients can also be used for blistering diseases.
